Learn all about the how we at Pothawira came to be.
Founding a Vision for Change
In 2009, in the heart of Malawi, Peter and Emma Maseko, together with their daughter, Dr. Anne Alaniz, set out on a heartfelt mission to spark hope and drive transformation within their community. Their vision led to the founding of the Pothawira (Safe Haven) Christian Mission Organisation. Guided by a simple yet powerful purpose, they aimed to alleviate poverty and suffering by empowering individuals—especially women and children—to live with dignity, dream big, and realize their full potential.
Building a Holistic Community
Driven by compassion and a commitment to holistic development, the Maseko family collaborated with various non-profit partners to establish a vibrant community village. This sanctuary encompasses several essential components: an orphanage that offers love and stability to vulnerable children, a medical clinic that provides essential healthcare, a primary school that nurtures young minds, and a church that fosters spiritual growth. Recognizing the need for further progress, they also envision future projects such as a surgical center and a high school to serve even more needs.
Progress and the Path Forward
Today, Pothawira stands as a beacon of hope and progress in Malawi. The organization’s remarkable growth has opened doors to new opportunities, but to continue expanding its reach and achieve lasting self-sufficiency, Pothawira now requires a dedicated lead organization to support its efforts.
